NMSC is excited to announce the names of over 16,000 semifinalists in the 2023 National Merit® Scholarship Program. These academically gifted high school seniors have the opportunity to remain in the competition for 7,250 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $28 million that will be offered next spring. In order to be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, semifinalists must meet several requirements to advance to the finalist level of competition.
About 95 percent of semifinalists are expected to achieve finalist status, and about half of finalists will win National Merit Scholarships and earn the title of Merit Scholar®. To compete for National Merit Scholarships, Semifinalists must advance to the Finalist level of the competition by fulfilling several additional requirements. A Semifinalist can become a Finalist and compete for a Merit Scholarship award in only one program year.
Requirements for Finalist standing To qualify as a Finalist, a Semifinalist must:
- continue to meet all requirements for participation in the competition
- be enrolled in the last year of high school and plan to enroll full-time in college the following fall, or be enrolled in the first year of college if grades 9 through 12 were completed in three years or less;

- take an authorized administration of the SAT® or ACT®, earn scores that confirm performance on the PSAT/NMSQT® taken for program entry, and arrange for the National Merit Program to receive an official score report of the SAT or ACT taken; and
- provide any additional documentation and information that NMSC requests.
In late August, NMSC sent high school principals a list of their Semifinalists, along with instructions for using the OSA. Important information about requirements and deadlines is available both through the OSA and on NMSC’s website. Both the Semifinalist and the school official must supply a substantial amount of information on the application, which NMSC uses to determine whether the student qualifies to advance to Finalist standing and to select scholarship recipients.

How many participants are honored annually in the National Merit Scholarship Program?
A total of about 50,000 participants receive recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. In early September, over16,000 of the 50,000 high scorers will be notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists. Semifinalists are the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

In early March, NMSC® will mail detailed instructions for completing an Online Scholarship Renewal Application for the upcoming academic year to Scholars at their home addresses. If NMSC does not receive the Scholar’s completed renewal application, an additional notification will be sent by email. If the Scholar does not submit the completed renewal application after this reminder, the scholarship will be withdrawn, and no further payments will be issued.
