Your 2023 VA disability compensation is a monthly tax-free payment paid to former military service members who suffered an illness or injury while in service. Veterans whose pre-existing conditions were made worse by time spent in service, or who developed a service-related disability after time spent in service, may also apply for benefits. Veterans may also receive additional benefits due to extenuating circumstances, including the number of dependents they have, loss of a limb or other serious injury, or having a disabled spouse.
It is important to note that this benefit is not permanent, and may be reviewed. Broadly speaking, the VA can change its rating schedule at any time, but it can also reexamine your individual claim to determine whether your disability has improved or worsened, which will increase your benefit amount. How VA Disability Compensation is Determined
You must first apply for disability compensation with the VA. This is not an automatic benefit on retirement, nor is it guaranteed. Veterans are responsible for arranging an appointment with the VA immediately after retirement or within a specified time frame thereafter. The amount you receive from VA disability compensation depends on several factors, including your specified disability rating described below, the severity of your disability, and the number of dependents you have.
The VA Disability Rating System Explained
The VA uses a disability rating system to assign a percentage to the severity of your disability, using a scale that measures from 0-100% and increases by 10%. This rating then determines your profit amount. The VA determines your rating through a combination of an internal review of your health and medical history, service treatment records, VA medical records and personal medical records that relate directly to your disability.
Your rating will be based on a single diagnostic code for each condition, even if the condition meets more than one diagnostic code. If you have more than one disability, you can use a combined-rating system to determine your benefit amount.
Compensation for Service-Connected Disability
Service-connected disability, as defined above, and examples of which include chronic back pain, hearing loss or tinnitus, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or traumatic brain injury (TBI), does not appear until activated Can service has expired, thereby excluding veterans from the normal time limit for applying for disability compensation. If this is the case, you may need to strengthen your claim for disability compensation with additional documentation other than medical records.
